Don't choose to get a house built, get one thats already done. The stress involved is NOT worth it. We are 2 weeks away from moving in and all was well until they started doing the finish work. Now everything looks rushed and looks like shit!

If you are gonna do baseboards make sure the nails are in all the way before painting them also don't leave an 1/8" gap in between joints. if you cut the board too short put it aside and cut a new one. you can most likely used that other piece elsewhere.

If you are wiring 2 way lights make sure when the 2 switches are in the off position that the light turns off. Every single switch in the house has been wired the exact same so about 10 switches are backwards.

I can see these things happening in a DIY project from someone who doesn't know any better but from a certified electrician I can't believe they think it's expectable. What ever happened to "work like you are working in your own home"? or "if it's worth doing it's worth doing right"?

I was super stoked with how everything was going until last week when everything started to fall apart. I don't trust anyone anymore I just want them out of my house so I can get going making it perfect.

I'll just fix it all myself. I'm more than capable and I don't even care if I need to spend money on new materials to fix the fuck ups. I'm just pissed off of the time it's going to take me. Time is the only thing in life you can get back. I was hoping to just move in and enjoy but it looks like I have a few weekends of work ahead of me.

In the mean time I shall quench my thirst with some of this:

As a carpenter, the idea of building a house from scratch for my family, is still incredibly daunting.

Building it yourself sure! I'd be all for it if I had the time. but right now all is done thru a contractor and I'm essentially just a 3rd party member. I can't talk to the trades direct I have to go the the contractor who is just a middleman really. but who hires these idiots? I'm guessing they were probably the cheapest electricians around. But if this is what you do for a living, it should be safe to assume that you should know what you are doing, or else you shouldn't be doing it.

"Every single switch in the house has been wired the exact same so about 10 switches are backwards."

Um.. That's how those work. The switch on one side of the room will be on/up and the other off/down?

When I was an Apprentice I loved new construction. It was an easy 40 hours. But the pressure from the GCs and Architects with no practical knowlege that I had to deal with later on made me realize..

New homes are horrible.

When the light is on it should be one side of the room up & the other side of the room down Am I right? When the light is off both switches should be down or technically if both were up it would turn the light off as well right?

Right now the switches are both down and the light is on? There is no way that is right.

I'm not an expert but I'm no fool either.

I thought so. I wouldn't rant about something I had no clue about. Really anyone with the slightest understanding of how switches worked would know it's not right. Which is why I'm so pissed that someone who does this for a living is fine with it. There is no way in hell their home is wired like that so why is it acceptable for mine to be like that?

You sold me with the details.

I'm a Plumber not a Sparky. It sounded normal at first.

Over the last 20 years I've seen some things that happen in home builds that just shouldn't happen. Beat your GC up and make them make it right.

See, I've got a house that's already done and I'm constantly having to do stuff to it.

If I were to build a house, I would basically be my own contractor. Building it myself would be a full time job for years.

Sadly, there are lots of people in the trades, who shouldn't be. I would make them fix what they've screwed up. And there's no reason you can't show up in the middle of a work day, and talk to the tradesmen. Well, other than that whole doing your own job thing.

Those switches were likely put in by an hourly employee who gives zero fucks, and was possibly stoned at the time.

That's the best way to do it. I just did not have a few years to wait.

As for the switches you are probably right just some hourly worker. It still aggravates me of people that take absolutely no pride in what they do. Even if you shovel shit for a living. Be the best damn shit shoveler you can be!

This "employee" is probably thinking to him self of how he deserves a raise or how he has works too hard for his money. God I'm really starting to hate living in a place where there is more jobs than people.

Where I grew up you had to perform to keep your job. Here as long as you show up your job is safe.

That kind of time is hard to come by.

Sadly, you are probably right about that employee. Stuff like that drives me nuts.
